With all the commotion about noise ordinances- mostly pertaining to live music, has motorcycle noise ever been looked into? With the coming spring season, and the motorcycle day trippers coming off the ferry, NY state does not allow aftermarket pipes that increase the noise level coming from bikes. What I would like to see is a public education campaign/ and/or enforcement, even if warnings were given out at first. This would tell bikers looking to visit NoFo that you should adjust your behavior so that the community remains the tranquil place it is, which is why you come here in the first place. Can something eb done here? Will the Times take up this issue?
Being a resident of Greenport myself, I definately understand the frustration with motorcycle noise especially during the summer. Whatever campaign Southold Town institutes, it should be down prior to the summer months to really get the word out there before summer residents come out.

I would not want to be a motor cycle rider without some noise. If you can't see us behind you how will you know we are there? Oops, cut you off at the turn, (I didn't use my autos turn signal) turned left with my right signal on, or any other. Most motor cycle riders are professionals, like it or not, they are doctors, nurses, lawyers, dentists, teachers, judges, even just plain nieghbors. Not all groups of cycle riders are BAD, and just like any driver, they want respect. You like respect when out driving your car, what makes themn different? Okay some bikes are loud, no doubt. but there has to be some noise, that is their only way of letting you know they are behind you. They must ride on your left toward the center line, If you can't see them in your review mirror or because of the blind spot in autos then noise is their safety. Maybe yours too. Since gas will be 5 dollars a gallon soon, you may wish you owned one. Your neighbors bike may start looking like a good investment soon. Besides, insurance may also be cheaper.

Unfortunately, the safety/noise correlation always seems to come up in this debate. But this has been settled - the aftermarket straight pipes are illegal. I'm just asking that the law on the books be enforced. When i'm to trying to enjoy the outdoors, and have to pause from speaking because a trail of bike are coming off the ferry with illegal pipes, I really don't care if its the Hells Angels or if its George Clooney and friends going to a PETA cookout. I'm not judging the riders -- just the conspicuous lawbreaking. I don't have a problem with Harleys - they are sold with legal pipes.
